The Art of the Macaron: Celebrating France’s Most Iconic Treat

Happy Macaron Day! Whether you are a lifelong fan of these delicate Parisian treats or looking for a reason to indulge, today is the perfect excuse to celebrate the artistry of the macaron.  Yes, these scrumptious melt-in-your-mouth little French creations have their own National Day, which also happens to coincide with other celebrations that day, such as the International Francophonie Day, which is the celebration of the French Language spoken all around the world, the first day of Spring, and the International Day of Happiness!

These delicious bites have a long French history, dating back to the early 1930s, when the “macaron” took on a Parisian flair as it is known today, thanks to an enterprising young baker named Pierre Desfontaines, an employee of the legendary Ladurée Maison founded in 1862. Of course, you’ll want to try the original Ladurée Macarons while in Paris or in other great cities, but did you know you can also get some pretty good, authentic French macarons online anytime? Better yet, make your own macarons from scratch at home with the easiest macaron recipe in 10 simple steps!

For fun, here are some culinary terms related to macarons:

The shell or coque is the smooth, domed top of the macaron; the foot or pied is the bubbly “skirt” at the base of the shell, which differentiates the macaron from a meringue. Macaronage is the most famous term, which is the folding technique of the dry ingredients into the egg whites.

For those following my 10-step DIY recipe, the secret isn’t just in the technique; it’s in the ingredients. Using extra-fine, blanched French almond flour is the difference between a grainy shell and that smooth, professional finish.
