French Baguette Awarded Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO

Today, Wednesday, November 30th, 2022, the French baguette has finally been inducted into the Unesco World Heritage List, or more precisely, the “Artisanal know-how and culture of baguette bread” has officially been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity! In the words of President Emmanuel Macron, the French national symbol is “250 grams of magic and perfection,” an artisanal art form that must be preserved for future generations.

The baguette is truly emblematic and “celebrates the French way of life: the baguette is a daily ritual, a structuring element of the meal, synonymous with sharing and conviviality, it is important that these skills and social habits continue to exist in the future,” said UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay.

More than 6 billion baguettes are sold every year in France; the artisanal boulangeries may be in peril, with many vanishing in rural areas due to industrial manufacturing.

“A day without a baguette is like a day without sun!”
