Amazon Prime Video also has a very nice selection to rent or buy (I hear there’s a collection of about 150 films and every genre). With an Amazon Prime membership all the movies are free and if you’re just signing up you get to try Amazon Prime FREE for 30 days, not a bad deal! You’ll find many older timeless classics and more recent titles and these are just a sampling of my personal favorite amazing French movies on Prime. (This list will be updated, so check back!)
Les Misérables – 2020- inspired by the 2005 riots in Paris , Les Misérables, is from breakout director Ladj Ly and a far cry from the original Victor Hugo’s Miserables although it still deals with the powerful and the powerless.
A French Village – 2009 – 2017 – 7 seasons and 72 episodes (!) created by Frédéric Krivine and principal director Philippe Triboit, also starring the very talented actress Audrey Fleurot , Robin Renucci,Marie Kremer, Francis Renaud, Nicolas Gob among others. A French Village brilliantly depicts German occupied France during WW II in a small village in France called Villeneuve and tells of the impact and effects on its inhabitants over time.
ELLE – 2016 – Written by Philippe Djian, directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Isabelle Huppert (One of my favorite actress) , Laurent Lafitte, and Virginie Efira. A successful businesswoman gets caught up in a game of cat and mouse as she tracks down the unknown man who assaulted her in her home.
Paris – 2009 – Written & directed by Cédric Klapisch and starring Juliette Binoche (another favorite Grande Dame of French cinema)) and Romain Duris. When Juliette’s brother is diagnosed with a terminal illness, both siblings rediscover themselves, their relationship, and the power of life and living in Paris in this poignant film.
Lupin on Netflix is the most recent version, but I also found a 2004 movie version called Arsene Lupin story immortalized by Maurice Leblanc’s novel (1864-1941) starring Romain Duris and directed by Jean-Paul Salome. Pretty good!
Stay tuned for more French movie release in 2021! This post will also be updated with some incontournables classics and feel free to comment about what you enjoyed watching. Bon visionnage like they say!
