May 1st is “La Fête du Travail” or Labor Day in France but it is also “La Fête du Muguet” a celebration that dates back to the Renaissance during Charles IX. It is a day we celebrate the blossoming of Lilly of the Valley and the arrival of Spring. The tradition is to give your loved ones, friends and/or acquaintances a little bouquet or sprig of Muguet to bring good fortune and happiness! Today on May 1st in France it is given away or sold on every street corner. According to the language of flowers Lilly of the Valley signifies “The return of happiness!”
Lilly of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) is a herbaceous plant that grows in temperate regions and blooms in Spring. It has small bell-shaped flowers arranged in clusters with a very strong and pleasant fragrance. Lilly of the Valley usually flowers in the woods, where it is cool and wet.
