BABAKUL – Spring Collection 2013

BABAKUL is a derivative of the French expression “baba cool” loosely translated as meaning relaxed-chic and French Bohemian “hippie”. It ‘s actually the endearing and affectionate nickname bestowed upon Kym Gold by her business partner and friend Sophie Wizmann.

How was Babakul born? In 2008  Kym Gold launched Babakul  with a core wardrobe silhouettes that could carry over from season to season. “I wanted to create a collection for women that had more than just a shelf life- they were timeless – and would always have the capability to transcend”, says Gold.

The essence of Babakul stems from Kym’s personal style motto “disheveled sexy” and on-the-go idealism.  Babakul signature is a timeless versatile wardrobe  in feminine hues and innovative fabrics that effortlessly  flows from day to night with a quick switch of a shoe, hand bag or accessories.  It is more than a style it is a lifestyle that says casual chic, easy spirited and effortless created for a kaleidoscope of women!

A true California native, Kym  grew up in the endless sunsets and natural beauty of Malibu and “home” is naturally her favorite place in LA.  She describes herself  as ” Very honest, no holds barred, never take no for an answer.”  Over the last 25 years, Kym’s unwavering drive, entrepreneurial spirit  and captivating style with an exquisite eye for details and trendsetting  has led her to achieve multiple successes in the fashion industry. Her personal philosophy encapsulates it all: “Think big or, don’t get out of bed.”

Before launching Babakul, Inc., Kym was leading Bella Dahl, Hippie Jeans and was also co-owner of True Religion Brand Jeans. Her fashions have been worn by many celebrities in Hollywood.

Well, get ready for the new Sprin collection!  An inspired and delightful array of Ombré prints, florals, crêpe de chine and a colorful palette that effortlessly mingle together. What’s Kym’s favorite Spring piece? “My new, nine ounce skinny boyfriend pant!” Where does Kym’s inspiration come from?  “A lot of my inspiration comes from traveling, living by the beach, my colorful rose garden that blooms every spring. Also, new shoe trends. The eclectic mixing of colors, fabrics and clever design whether it be chunky, platforms or sleek and sexy. Using all these components coming together makes a collection.” Kym explains.

Babakul is  also very involved with many celebrity & philanthropic events, so what’s coming up? “I am co-chair for the Jane Seymour and James Keach Open Hearts Foundation. Women’s health issues and particularly Breast Cancer is a huge personal cause that’s close to home for me. With my business partner Dr. Sheryl  Ross, we have invented a vitamin called DEFY after having taken us over four years of research. We found that vitamin D to be a major deficiency in many women’s health issues. Vitamin D is a great added benefit to women’s better health overall.”

Any words of wisdom?  “If you only have one smile, give it to people who love you…”  by Maya Angelou.”

In 2009 Sophie Wizmann joined her friend Kym Gold  as partner and  COO  at Babakul “Kym truly embodies the spirit and soul of Babakul” says  Sophie.

Together these two women make a driven kick-ass duo and this partnership is the perfect blend of art and commerce. They have  propelled the company’s growth and have made what Babakul as it is known today.  “I always get what I want, never take no for an answer !!” says Sophie . The brand has evolved into a comprehensive collection which includes an array of fabrications spanning from knits to wovens, leather and accessories. “The brand has really enticed a global following. We have since teamed up with distributors in Canada, Japan and Australia.” says Wizmann. Babakul is also sold at top retailers nationwide including Theodore, Ron Herman, Fred Segal, National Jeans, Gia Ventola and more with international stores in  Australia , Canada, Japan, London, Germany, and Mexico in addition to the East & West Coast in the United States and online!

Moroccan born, raised in Canada and France, Sophie has become a self-made business woman utilizing her multi-cultural upbringing and travel. Graduating with honors in Computer Science and Business Administration at the accredited and highly competitive University of Montreal and René Descartes in Paris, France, Ms. Wizmann’s first fashion stint was serving as the design coordinator for FAMILY a knit company in France for six years. After traveling throughout Asia and Europe, Ms. Wizmann solidified her manufacturing skills for knit products as she worked for companies including Kookai, Blanc Bleu and Naf Naf, among others.

Sophie started her own business, “Life Stinks”, in Florida providing promotional items to clubs, restaurants, hotels and cruise ships throughout the United States and Caribbean. Ms. Wizmann chose to  take a well deserved break from the industry for two years as she managed  The Sereno Beach Hotel in the luxurious paradise of St. Barth. The pull and excitement of the fashion industry, however, drew Sophie back in no time when she was recruited by Paul Guez of Blue Holdings, Inc., where she spent 10 years overseeing brand development and marketing campaigns as VP of  Marketing and Brand Manager for high-end denim collections at Blue Holdings Inc, Taverniti and Antik Denim. In life as in business Sophie believes that,“if you believe in something , take the risk and Jump !”   She has a pet peeve: “Buyers with no guts, no vision, trade shows!!! …so outdated….”

A year after her arrival on board, Babakul opened its flagship boutique  in December 2010 located at Fred Segal inSanta Monica – 4000 square foot  houses the entire Babakul collection as well as revolving selection of handpicked accessory designers.

On a more personal note Sophie’s favorite motto is in French: ” Une femme avertie en vaut deux ” meaning, “A woman forewarned is forearmed”. How does Sophie define fashion?  “Fashion is to live according to your times and dressing sexy no matter what your age! We want all women to feel good !”  Regarding the 2013 Spring Collection Sophie loves “our Babakul Sandra skinny in colors and our Sasha  tank, I love them, live in them…”

“Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don’t, and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.” ― Harvey MacKay
